Happy Halloween!

LOL

If you had purchased $1,000 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago, you would have $49 left. With AIG, you would have less than $15 left. With Fannie Mae, you would have $2.50 left of the original $1,000. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drunk all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have $214 cash. Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle....It's called the 401-Keg....

"Winds of Change"

balloonfiesta 025, originally uploaded by McClure77.

It makes me feel a little eerie to have seen, appreciated and snapped a picture of the balloon that would the next day meet with tragedy. (the triangle one) I don't know if the men who were killed and injured were the same ones who were in it the day I took this picture.

Anyway, just thought I'd post as a kind of memorial. Hopefully the injured man recovers, and hopefully the family of the man who was killed will find peace.

Glossary

So does anyone know, if I want to use a glossary of terms used in a specific protocol, would it be plagarism for me to copy and paste said definitions into the glossary section of my paper?  My paper may not even use all of them, but it seems like it couldn't hurt as a reference.  Obviously I could cite whatever web reference I used for the glossary.

Summer Vegetable Gratin

I keep thinking I need to blog about cooking because I love it so much, and am so interested in it.  I made a new dish last night and I was so impressed with it that I thought it should be my first food blog.  It was a pretty big departure from what I normally cook, and I was amazed.  I've been trying to incorporate more veggies and vegetarian options into my menu for both health and cost reasons.
This was a Summer vegetable gratin, made with zucchini, squash, carmalized onions and tomatoes roasted in a garlic thyme oil., and is covered with a parmesan shallot breadcrumb topping.  It was SO tasty!  I made a big pan and I thought it would be way too much, but it's almost already gone.  I think it helped that I bought all the vegetables at the farmer's market yesterday, so they were nice and fresh.  And the tomatoes were a delicous mix of heirlooms, full of flavor.

Edit:  I'm going to add the recipe here, so that it's a reference for me as well as for others who may want to try it :)  It's a little bit of work, but I think it probably gets easier as you do it, so you get faster at the steps.

Techinical writers

You know, it's always annoying to have to paraphrase a good techinical writer.  When they get to use words like "synchrony" and you have to settle for the the less interesting way of saying that, like "at the same time as", or whatever.

History

[info]starswolf's blog entry about the grandmother's blog got me to thinking.  It would be really cool if I could get my parents to blog their histories.  There are so many interesting stories that would be great to have written down.  In fact, it would be even cooler if after they had completed it, or as much as possible, you could print it up in a hardcover format and have it for future generations to read.  I can only imagine how cool it would be if my grandparents or great grandparents had a written history of their lives for me to read.  That would be so cool!
I think that is the measure of a successful life.  If you look back and you have lots of crazy stories to tell, then you know that you are on the right track.  I worry because I used to be able to say that, but I feel like in the last few years I don't have as many stories to show for my time.  It's possible that I'm just looking at it the wrong way.  After all, I HAVE gone through the adventure of pregnancy and started the journey of parenthood.  I think part of what I need to do differently is to try to stop avoiding things because they might take me out of my comfort zone.  I didn't use to do that, but I've noticed that now with the baby, I don't push the envelope as much, because I don't want to mess up her schedule, etc.  I think she is much more flexible than I give her credit for.

Hmm I'm a little bit surprised by this result, but maybe not....I'll have to think about it:

Your result for The Perception Personality Image Test...

HFPC - The Photographer

You perceive the world with particular attention to humanity. You focus on what's in front of you (the foreground) and how that fits into the larger picture. You are also particularly drawn towards the colors around you. Because of the value you place on humanity, you tend to seek out other people and get energized by being around others. You like to deal directly with whatever comes your way without dealing with speculating possibilities or outcomes you can't control. You are in tune with all that is around you and understand your life as part of a larger whole. You are a down-to-earth person who enjoys going with the flow.

The planets are aligning...

So today at Costco, we were just finishing up shopping when who should come up from behind but my friend Sandi and her kids, who now live in Israel.  They were out in CA with us for that seed assignment, and then they took the next one to Israel. It's so weird because I had just been thinking about her in the last week, and wanting to get in touch with her.  They go back to Israel next week.

I returned home to find 6 more friends have joined my list on Facebook, one of whom just joined yesterday as well, and worked around the corner from where we lived in CA.   I'm sure the Facebook high will begin to wear off as I stop reconnecting with so many people, but it's still so cool!

A new Dr in the house!

Yay Congratulations to Alison who is now officially a PHD!!  She successfully defended her disertation today.  Woot!
And tomorrow she moves to OR.  How exciting for her!

In other news, today I joined Facebook after being prompted for quite a while to do so....zomg!
It's SO much cooler than Myspace!  I always found myspace to be kind of lame (no offense to those who love it) but on facebook I've already connected with like 3 or 4 people I was in grade school with......small world!

Plus, being the travel junkie I am, I can't help but love the map app that you can have on your profile that allows you to map all the places you've been.   I'm still figuring it out, but so far it seems pretty neat :)

To re-home or not to re-home?

It seems as if we're back to the question of whether or not to help Ella to find another home.  We've never really answered it, we've just completely avoided it.  Sean doesn't care either way, which puts the decision making (as always) on me.  I've never had to even consider giving away a dog.  I've always just accepted them and all their faults for life, as I feel that it is your responsibility to do.  However, with this situation it's about more than me.  I worry that as a result of my inaction, I am placing my baby in harm's way.
